Content
This six credit course focuses on professional communications, virtual team and project work, multicultural co-operation, academic and professional writing, and professional self-development.
The course includes two mandatory online sessions at the beginning of the course and three online group simulations later during the course. The two online sessions will be held in the evenings with the teacher and the whole group present.
After the online sessions, the students will be divided into groups. Each group will do three online group simulations organized according to the students’ own schedule. Furthermore, the students complete twelve written individual assignments related to the different course topics supporting the online group simulations.
The assignments are tailored based on the findings of language needs studies and are based on real working life communication situations. For example, the case company of the negotiation simulations is a local, existing company.
Learning goals
Students who have taken this course are able to co-operate and work in multicultural virtual teams. They are able to communicate efficiently and fluently in work-related interactive situations with emphasis on meetings and negotiations. The students can write texts and written messages demonstrating the control of communicative professional situations.
The students can also efficiently understand and summarize texts. They are able to use academic style and use references properly in their written production. The students are ready to develop their professional identities through self-reflective tasks during the course.
This course corresponds to the CEFR language levels C1-C2. (CEFR = Common European Framework for Languages).

Course implementation is 100% online.
Previous studies
The course is meant for students who have completed their compulsory English courses in their degree programmes. The students on this course should have control of their basic field-specific vocabulary in English and seek to develop their confidence further in communicative situations.
Please notice Like a Pro is an updated version of the previous course Moving On! Professional English Communication, so if you have completed that Averko course, do not register to Like a Pro!
Evaluation
Course is evaluated with grading scale 0-5.
(1-2) After completing the course, the students are able to take part and work in multicultural virtual teams. They are able to communicate to some extent in work-related interactive situations with emphasis on meetings and negotiations. The students can write texts and written messages even though there are still lacks in communicative professional conventions and language. The students can also summarize texts. They are able to use some academic style and include references in their written production. The students try to develop their professional identities through self-reflective tasks during the course.
(3-4) After completing the course, the students are able to co-operate and work with some success in multicultural virtual teams. They are able to communicate understandably in work-related interactive situations with emphasis on meetings and negotiations. The students can write functional texts and written messages demonstrating some control of communicative professional situations. The students can also understand and summarize texts. They are able to use academic style and use references to some extent in their written production. The students aim at developing their professional identities through self-reflective tasks during the course.
(5) After completing the course, the students are able to co-operate and work successfully in multicultural virtual teams. They are able to communicate efficiently and fluently in work-related interactive situations with emphasis on meetings and negotiations. The students can write effective texts and written messages demonstrating full control of communicative professional situations. The students can also efficiently understand and summarize texts. They are able to use academic style and use references properly in their written production. The students are willing to develop their professional identities through self-reflective tasks during the course.

Enrollment for Averko online studies is three (3) times a year, timetables for study rounds are available here. Enrollment is done on a electronic enrollment form.
Enrollment for the study round opens on 14th August, 2023.
Online studies are conducted in Centria’s Itslearning study environment and courses have a limited participant intake. Participation in studies can be cancelled free of charge within 3 weeks of the starting day.
Students are immediately notified in case of courses being cancelled as soon as the official enrollment time ends. If the course starts as stated, students are contacted closer to the starting date (approx. a week before studies begin).
At the moment, the study fee for open UAS studies is 10€ / ECTS credit. The studies are invoiced after the three-week cancellation period, calculated from the start of the studies. Dropping out or not completing studies does not entitle you to a refund or cancellation of the invoice.
Open UAS study fees are based on enrollment. You can cancel participation to studies free of charge during the three (3) weeks cancellation time by simply informing it to averko(a)centria.fi.
If you are completing a degree in a Finnish secondary school, Centria UAS studies are free of charge and offered to you as väylä studies. In the enrollment form, enter the organisation / educational institution where you are studying (e.g. väylä / school name) and also mention the name of the teacher or student counsellor (with whom you have discussed on participating in the course) as the contact person.
Students of other UAS’s (Campusonline) can participate in studies free of charge on basis of a co-operation agreement. We ask you to please use school email when enrolling and also state the home school where requested on the enrollment form.
If you are a Centria UAS student, Averko online studies are free of charge. You register through the Peppi system.
