Campuses and campus towns

Our three campuses are located in beautiful Finnish towns: Kokkola, Pietarsaari and Ylivieska. Students of our English conducted degree programmes study on our Kokkola and Pietarsaari campuses. The learning environments of our campuses are diverse and transformative.

Kokkola

Kokkola is a charming seaside town with a population of about 48 000. The king of Sweden, Gustav II Adolf founded the town in 1620. Anders Chydenius obtained free trading rights for the city in 1765. At that time Kokkola was famous for its ships and their tar cargos. The trading tradition is still going strong and it is one of the reasons for keeping the city international, bilingual, obliging and distinctive. Nowadays the town is the provincial centre of Central Ostrobothnia.

Kokkola is also a cultural town that offers versatile cultural experiences and a broad spectrum of annual events. Kokkola is traditionally a shipping and trading town as well as a modern and vital provincial centre.

The old part of the town, Neristan and the sea attract visitors, as well as the multiple annual events. Kokkola is also a known conference city that offers versatile and functional meeting services in the middle of Finland.

Pietarsaari – Jakobstad

Jakobstad is a beautiful historical city located in Ostrobothnia in Western Finland, on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. The population is about 19 000 people.

Jakobstad was established by countess Ebba Brahe in 1652. She gave the town its name after her late husband Jacob de la Gardie. The Finnish speakers however retained the old name of the parish and therefore the name of the town in Finnish still remains Pietarsaari (from Pedersöre).

The town is renowned for its maritime history. Shipbuilding with its associated shipping industry has long traditions in Jakobstad. Jakobstad is also known as a town of parks and gardens. Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Finland’s national poet, was born in Jakobstad.
