Drones and autonomous devices
Since 2016, Centria’s strong drone expertise has been utilised in several different RDI projects, and authority and company experiments. The pioneering experience of drone project workers is now also utilised in teaching.
Centria Drone Lab is a research, development and innovation (RDI) environment located in Ylivieska, Finland, dedicated to advancing the use of unmanned and autonomous systems for the needs of industry, the public sector and education. Its mission is to accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies, develop practical applications, and strengthen the competitiveness of organisations at both national and international levels.
The activities of the research group encompass autonomous and remotely operated systems operating in the air, on land and on water. Key development areas include drones, unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), intelligent sensor systems, remote sensing, data analytics, and the safe and responsible deployment of advanced technologies. Activities are carried out in collaboration with businesses, public authorities, research organisations and educational institutions.
The research group provides expertise, testing and development environments, as well as opportunities for piloting and demonstration projects in areas such as environmental monitoring, infrastructure inspection, logistics, safety and security, the energy sector, and industrial applications. While the laboratory in Ylivieska serves as the hub of operations, research, development and educational activities are conducted across all Centria campuses in cooperation with regional, national and international partners.
Centria Drone Lab brings together research, education and industry collaboration to create practical experiments, innovative solutions and impactful outcomes that promote the adoption and utilisation of autonomous systems across a wide range of operational environments.

Centria Drone Lab’s equipment is versatile and consists of commercial solutions. In addition, Centria can design and manufacture tailored drone solutions based on various tests and uses. The comprehensive equipment can be used to carry out various demonstrations and experiments.
