Accepting the study place and enrolling

You must accept your study place by the deadline through the My Studyinfo (Oma Opintopolku) service. If an applicant does not accept the study place by the deadline, they will lose their study place.

After accepting the study place, you must also enroll as either present (attending) or absent (non-attending) for the academic year through the My Studyinfo service. Once the study place has been accepted, you can proceed to enroll for the academic year.

Only students who have enrolled as present (attending) have the right to pursue studies. If a student does not enroll for the study year, the student loses the study right. Therefore, in addition to accepting the study place, it is essential to complete the academic year enrollment.

Registering as absent

A new student may register as absent (non-attending) during their first academic year only for statutory reasons, such as:

  1. Military service under the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007), or Act on Women’s Voluntary Military Service (194/1995)
    • Military call-up order (Finnish document only)
  2. Maternity, paternity or parental leave
    • Kela’s certificate regarding maternity, paternity or parental allowance period or, if the certificate has not yet been received, a doctor’s certificate verifying the pregnancy. Corresponding certificates from the authorities of other countries regarding statutory parental leave.
    • The document will have to be notarized or verified by a Finnish medical professional.
  3. Illness or injury preventing the student from starting their study
    • Sick leave certificate or a doctor’s certificate. The certificate must state which illness or injury the student suffers from and that this condition prevents the student from beginning their studies (NB! only starting first-year students).
    • The document will have to be notarized or verified by a Finnish medical professional.

Enrolling as absent (non-attending) due to statutory reasons does not affect the regular study time. However, registering as absent (non-attending) for the first academic year due to an illness or injury consumes student’s absent semesters. Other statutory reasons for absence do not consume the absent semesters. Students can enroll as absent for a maximum of one academic year (two academic terms) without a specific reason during their studies.

Please note that a first year student is required to pay the tuition fee before enrolling as absent.

The student must submit the required documentation supporting their absence (non-attendance) by 31 August if studies begin in the autumn semester, or by 8 January if studies begin in the spring semester.

Documentation for absence (non-attendance) must be submitted using the E-application. Logging in requires strong authentication using online banking credentials or a mobile certificate. Alternatively, the student may contact Centria Student Services by email and get instructions on how to submit the documentation.

The documentation may also be submitted to Centria Student Services by post:

If a student registers as absent (non-attending) during their first academic year but fails to submit adequate documentation of the reason for absence (non-attendance) by the deadline set by the higher education institution, they will lose their right to study.

If the student later wishes to begin their studies, they must apply to the institution for readmission. The readmission process does not require participation in a new student selection.
