Study types

The blended learning format is more flexible, to combine with other life activities, but requires more commitment to studying than daytime studies. This format includes less contact teaching than daytime studies, and more independent / group student work. Contact teaching is scheduled based on the study programme, and may occur during the day, in the evenings, on weekends, or as intensive teaching periods. Regardless of the study mode, the programme structure remains the same, including the number of credits, practical training, and final thesis.

In daytime studies, contact teaching is arranged on weekdays, usually between 8 am and 6 pm. In addition to contact teaching, studies can include online learning, group and project work, independent work and periods of practical training. Regardless of the study mode, the programme structure remains the same, including the number of credits, practical training, and final thesis.

There are two kinds of higher education institutions in Finland:

  • universities of applied sciences (UAS) and
  • universities.

Universities conduct scientific research and provide instruction and postgraduate education based on it. Universities of Applied Sciences train professionals in response to labour market needs and conduct research and development which supports instruction and promotes regional development in particular.

Briefly put: universities have a more scientific focus whereas UASs have a more practical approach.

Teaching methods

A teaching situation in which the teacher and student are physically in the same room.

Teaching during which the teacher and student are physically in separate places but simultaneously connected online.

Students can choose to attend face-to-face or online.

Depending on the course, the intensive course can be taught either face-to-face on campus or as distance learning. An intensive course typically involves significantly more teaching than the normal timetable for the group.

The course has a start and end date, within which the student has the flexibility to enrol and complete the course according to their own schedule.

Academic year

1.8.–31.7. Studies take place usually between September and May. Summer studies take place between 1 May and 31 August.

The basic unit of study in terms of content and structure. A course may include face-to-face teaching, distance learning and independent work. The teacher of the course decides how the teaching will be delivered.

Autumn or spring semester. The autumn semester starts at the beginning of September and ends in December. The spring semester starts in January and ends in May. Summer studies may start in May and run mainly from June to August.

The academic year is divided into three terms, one in the autumn semester, one in the spring semester and one in the summer.

Content of studies

A measure of the extent of studies. One credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of student work. A 40-hour study week corresponds to approximately 1.5 credits.

Exam in a supervised Exam room, Exam rooms are available at different universities and the student books an appointment to take the exam through the Exam Service of the university.

The final thesis indicates a student’s expertise in understanding, applying, and producing professional results in their own field. At its best, the thesis is a bridge between studies and working life. In the final thesis, the student has to incorporate different areas of the studies. The scope of the thesis is 15 credits in the bachelor’s degree programmes and 30 credits in the master’s degree programmes.

The course will be implemented in Peppi, for which degree and pathway students will enrol.

A plan drawn up by the teacher to guide the implementation of the course, based on the description of the course objectives.

The learning outcomes define the competences that students will have acquired on completion of the course.

A personal study plan is an individual study plan that takes into account the student’s prior learning (RPL), life situation and study ability. The PSP is drawn up in cooperation with the persons involved in the student’s guidance.

Practical training is an essential part of studies at the University of Applied Sciences. It is included in all fields of education and all degrees. Students primarily complete their practical training in a work environment, that is related to their field of education.

The aim of doing practical training is to give the students an opportunity to apply their knowledge acquired in theoretical study and to develop their skills of independent work.

Practical training is not necessarily a job even though it is carried out in a workplace as practical training is almost always unpaid.

RPL, the identification and recognition of prior learning, is based on a competency-based approach and is part of continuous learning. Learning and competences are not only generated in formal education and training, but also in working life, in voluntary work, in hobbies, etc. Students also have the right to apply for recognition and inclusion of such competences. You can discuss the recognition and validation of prior learning with your student counsellor or teacher tutor.

Student councelling is a goal-oriented interaction in which the councellor, based on theory and their own experience, helps and encourages the person being guided so that they gain the skills to guide their own activities. Guidance involves providing support in uncertainties about learning and learning related issues.

The aim of studification is to bring work into learning and transfer school learning into the workplace. Through studification learning and skills become visible and they can be observed and assessed.

The Pathway studies only concerns applicants and students already living in Finland. The studies represent 45 credits of the first year studies in a bachelor’s degree and 10-15 credits of a master’s degree, depending on the scope of the degree. The studies start along a regular study group. Pathway students do not have the right to obtain a degree. The aim of the pathway studies is to achieve eligibility to apply to degree studies at a UAS. After completing the pathway studies, the student can apply for degree studies with their open UAS studies.

Successfully completed studies that are suitable for the degree are included in the degree. Students enrolled in master’s studies must have an existing bachelor’s degree. Two years (2) of professional experience must be completed before applying for the right to a degree.
