HAAVE – DEVELOPMENT OF A DECENTRALISED, LOW-CARBON ENERGY PRODUCTION PROCESSING CONCEPT IN CENTRAL OSTROBOTHNIA
The aim of the project is to support the reform of the energy system and promote regional economic transformation towards carbon-neutral energy production in Central Ostrobothnia.
Branch: Chemistry and bioeconomy
Duration: 1.9. 2023 – 31.3. 2026
Region: Central Ostrobothnia
Financed by: Keski-Pohjanmaan liitto
Project Manager: Heidi Kanala-Salminen
The HAAVE project focuses on developing solutions to replace fossil fuels and promote the use of renewable energy sources in the region.
The main priorities of the project are
- New knowledge: the project will generate new knowledge and innovative solutions to replace peat and other fossil fuels in Central Ostrobothnia.
- Gas economy and recycled fertilisers: the aim is to create a development environment for the gas economy and recycled fertilisers sector in Central Ostrobothnia that can be used nationally and internationally. This will provide support for agricultural and industrial activities in the region that produce by-products.
- Circular economy: the HAAVE project will strengthen Central Ostrobothnia’s role as a leading region for bio- and circular economy activities. The region’s energy expertise will grow and infrastructure will be developed.
The project will develop a mobile and location-independent demonstration environment that will be used to develop and pilot the whole production concept of a decentralised, low-carbon biogas economy. The aim is to enable the profitable and controlled production of biogas and synthetic clean fuels.
The demonstration environment will provide the opportunity to test best practices and optimise biogas production for bio-based agricultural and industrial by-streams. This can reduce risks and increase cost efficiency in a full-scale production plant. The demonstration platform will also be used to test the criticality of liquefaction of purified biomethane for potential residues. This will contribute to carbon capture and the production of environmentally friendly fuels.
The project is a continuation of the HABITUS – Decentralised biogas production and liquefaction in Finland project.
