Flexibility in Studies – Vodcasts to Support Learning and Clinical Placements
Developing clinical placement practices in nursing education and more flexible ways of completing clinical studies
Branch: Wellbeing and health
Duration: 1 May 2026 – 21 December 2027
Region: Central Ostrobothnia / National
Financed by: Service Centre for Continuous Learning and Employment (SECLE / Jotpa)
Project Manager: Niko Sivula
The Flexibility in Studies project is implemented jointly by Centria University of Applied Sciences and the Wellbeing Services County of Central Ostrobothnia (Soite). It aims to develop clinical placement practices in nursing education and more flexible ways of completing clinical studies, particularly for students with a practical nursing background who are studying while working. The project seeks to make it easier to combine work and studies, support progress towards a nursing degree and strengthen cooperation between education and working life.
Vodcasts to Support Clinical Competence and Placements
The project will produce 15 vodcast-based learning modules to strengthen clinical competence and enable learning regardless of time or place. The vodcasts can be used both to prepare for clinical placements and during the placements themselves. They aim to deepen students’ knowledge and skills, improve their understanding of clinical care situations and strengthen the connection between theoretical knowledge and nursing practice.
Topics include acute care nursing, oncology nursing, gerontological nursing, infectious diseases, the prevention of healthcare-associated infections and challenging situations involving communication and safety.
Developing a Flexible Clinical Placement Model
The project will develop and pilot supervised clinical placements in home care settings. The aim is to enable students to complete part of their required clinical placements while working in their existing paid positions, provided that the workplace and supervision meet the placement’s learning outcomes. Students’ prior learning will be taken into account through the recognition of prior learning (RPL) process. The pilot aims to involve 30 nursing students.
The vodcasts and the flexible clinical placement model form a complementary whole, designed to support smoother study pathways and strengthen cooperation between nursing education and working life.
