The mentors are ready to welcome new students

Centria is launching a new peer mentoring program to help international students settle into their new environment and daily life. Six student mentors are ready to share their experiences, offer support, and build a welcoming community where every student can feel at home.

Centria is launching a new mentoring program aimed at supporting new international students as they settle into their new environment and community.

Six students were selected as mentors in the spring, and over the summer, they began planning and getting to know each other. The mentors are students who have already found their own path and want to share their tacit knowledge and experience. They are prepared to support new international students in adapting to a new environment and culture, and to create a positive and supportive atmosphere. They will organize various themed events throughout the semester to help new students get to know each other and feel at home.

The program does not focus on academic support; instead, its main emphasis is on social orientation and ensuring the smooth running of everyday life. Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where every student feels like part of the community.

One of the mentors shared her thoughts on the program:

So far, the program has helped me grow in my role, build meaningful connections, and understand what it means to support others not just with information, but with empathy and presence. I hope this program becomes a safe space where students feel heard, welcomed, and supported not just academically, but socially and emotionally too.

The mentors will meet new students for the first time in person on Monday, September 1st, on campus, where students can also register for school. The mentors are supported and trained by integrations specialist Emilia Pollarikoski. Emilia ensures that they receive the necessary guidance and preparation to help fellow students with their arrival and smooth transition to life in Kokkola.
