Background

The aim of the project is to enhance the profitability of the existing business companies and create new technology and service business by

i) deploying principles of a circular economy and resource efficiency in the companies of Kokkola area,

ii) assisting companies and other actors (research and service organizations, public authorities) to identify and enhance utilization of reciprocal resources and closing the loop on waste materials, as well as

iii) creating conditions for utilization of industrial symbiosis by recycling materials, energy and resources.

At the same time when developing business opportunities, virgin raw materials are saved, green-house gas emissions and the amount of landfill wastes are reduced, usages of recycled and reused materials are increased, production of hazardous waste is reduced and the usage of water is optimized. In addition, the aim is to contribute the execution of the Resource Efficient Europe Flagship Initiative that is a part of the Europe 2020 Strategy and the Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe supporting countries and companies for sustainable growth via a resource efficient, lowcarbon economy.

Companies of the Kokkola area are included in the target group of the project. However, the impacts of the project are also targeted to area’s economic life and inhabitants indirectly via jobs retained, new jobs and possible new business generated. Environmental improvements have an indirect effect on the area’s inhabitants, too.

The project increases the self-sufficiency of the area by utilizing current material, energy and person resources and decreasing environmental burden through products’ life cycle. The ecological benefits of the project are minimization of waste amounts, lower carbon foot print, increased material and energy efficiency, and decreased consumption of virgin raw materials, energy and water.

The project has large synergies with national and international programs that ensures good channels and opportunities for co-operation. Motiva Ltd coordinates a national Finnish Industrial Symbiosis System Programme, FISS that will be included as a part of Kokkola Industrial Symbiosis System. The supervisor of KISS will work as a regional organizer in the national symbiosis programme.
