Re-Archtive North: From challenges to possibilities
Northern Sweden and Finland face similar challenges in maintaining their built environments and making small towns attractive to residents. This project aims to develop tools and methods for the sustainable reuse of historic and existing buildings in these regions, turning current burdens into opportunities.
The project will begin by collecting and sharing best practices and success stories from the area and beyond, using this knowledge to create tools, business models, and an online platform. This platform will help public and private actors repurpose unused buildings for tourism, housing, business, and social initiatives.
The platform will also act as a marketplace, connecting users with project outcomes, and will explore advanced technologies like blockchain for secure, transparent transactions. Unused buildings can be creatively repurposed into B&Bs, artist residencies, co-working spaces, or event venues, boosting the appeal of these remote areas as places to live and work.
Overall, the project promotes building preservation, eco-tourism, and sustainable growth in Northern Sweden and Finland, aligning with Interreg Aurora’s goal of enhancing the region’s attractiveness, competitiveness, and shared cultural heritage.
The project is financed by the Interreg Aurora program, Lapin Liitto and Region Norrbotten. The project partners are Luleå University of Technology (lead partner), Centria University of Applied Sciences, Lapland University of Applied Sciences and Moskosel Creative Park.
